1. Choosing the Right Hairstyle

Choosing your hairstyle is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. After all, your wedding pictures will last forever. Here are some important questions to ask yourself: What hairstyle normally makes you feel most like yourself? Do you always wear your hair up? Will you be wearing a veil? Have you considered the neckline of your dress? The busier the fabric the more polished and simple you should style your hair. For a halter top, high collar or sweetheart neckline, an up-do is recommended. For strapless or off the shoulder necklines, you may prefer to wear your hair down so you feel less exposed.

2. Leave It to the Professionals

Don’t assume your regular stylist is the best choice for your wedding hair. Stylists all have different strengths, so choose one with experience in hair styling for special events. Do your homework.

3. Have a Trial Run

Trial runs are a great way to determine exactly which hairstyle you’ll be happiest with for your walk down the aisle. Schedule a trial run appointment not too early and not too late. Four to six weeks before your wedding day is optimal. On the day of the trial be prepared. Bring pictures of your favorite looks as well as any hair accessories you would like to wear. Also bring your veil if you plan to wear one.

Trial run tips:

  • Bring a photo in your dress from your fitting. This will help your stylist recommend a hairstyle that works well with your dress and your features.
  • Once the stylist has completed your hairstyle at the trial run, take photos—front, back and side. Remember, your hair will be noticed from all angles, not just the front. Bring these pictures to your hair appointment on the day of your wedding to recap with your stylist. It’s all in the details.
  • Communication is everything. Make sure your stylist knows your absolute likes and dislikes.

4. Do Not Get a Haircut or Trim Before You Say “I Do”

Regular haircuts are a great way to keep your hair healthy; however, getting a fresh trim just before your wedding day is not recommended for medium to long hair or for hair that will be up-styled. Take a haircut hiatus for six weeks before your wedding. Instead, dazzle your locks with glosses or glaze treatments for shine and add natural soft highlights for dimension. Be true to you and don’t make drastic color or haircut changes.

5. On the Big Day

Allow for plenty of time for your hair and make-up so you don’t feel rushed. Arrive at your hair appointment with one-day dirty hair! Super clean hair will not last as long in an up-do or curled. If you are prone to an oily scalp, wash and dry your hair the night before. Do not use heavy conditioners, treatments or leave-in conditioner. Pack an emergency kit: bobby pins, hair tie and travel-size hairspray are a must.

6. For the Groom

Just like his bride, a groom will want to look his best on the big day. Grooms are more involved in today’s weddings than ever before. Whatever your style—whether it’s a new age pompadour or just a simple cut—keep it clean and tidy for your wedding day.

  • Getting a professional clean up 1-2 days before the big day will remove any unwanted hair on neck, sideburns and hairline. Tame a beard with beard oil to create shine and softness.
  • Don’t be afraid of product! Use a pomade to create definition and hold, or use a texture spray for fullness. Avoid gel or stiff wet products on fine hair.
  • Practice makes perfect. Practice applying product with fingers, avoiding the palms of your hand, which can cause over-saturation.

Groom Tip: Happy wife = Happy life
